A plumbing emergency is anything that is actively damaging your home, making it unsafe, or leaving it without an essential service. In Canberra that usually means a pipe that has split after a frosty night, water coming through a ceiling, a sewer backing up into the bathroom, no water at all, a gas smell, or a hot water system that has failed in winter. If water is running and you cannot stop it, close the isolation valve at the meter and call. If you are not sure whether the problem can wait until morning, call anyway and describe it; the person on the phone will tell you honestly whether it is a night job or a daytime one.

Arrival time depends on where you are, the time of day and what other calls are on that night. Water expands when it freezes. On a Canberra winter night the temperature drops to minus five and sometimes lower, and any pipe exposed to that air freezes solid: garden taps, hot water relief lines, evaporative cooler lines on the roof, pipes on south-facing walls and lines in unheated roof spaces. The ice splits the copper or the joint, but nothing leaks while it stays frozen. When the sun reaches the wall mid-morning and the ice thaws, the split opens and the water runs. That is why burst pipe calls peak on bright, frosty mornings in June, July and August rather than during the night itself.

Plumbing, drainage and gasfitting work in the ACT must be done by tradespeople licensed by Access Canberra under the Construction Occupations (Licensing) Act 2004. Across the border in Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra and Googong the work falls under NSW law and must be done by a plumber licensed with NSW Fair Trading.
